Warren Buffet pessimistic about newspapers

Posted by Administrator in Will Atkinson, Journalism, News

Warren Buffet

Social media Web site Reddit has an interesting discussion on Warren Buffet’s recent assessment of newspapers (Warning: the discussion on Reddit contains explicit language) in Berkshire Hathaway’s annual letter.

It’s interesting to read comments on newspapers by people who don’t work in the media world. These are the readers that journalists have to reach out to.

Here are some excerpts:

“People aren’t paying for news. They’re paying for a newspaper to get coupons, the home shopper, classifieds, tv guide, or obits. But they would never buy a paper that was JUST those things. They want news.” - hopper

“The [reputable news sources] are more heavily edited and fact-checked, but they are also pruned into banality and contain hidden biases in the facts, interviews, and events never reported at all.” - tofocsend

On community journalism, Reddit user 570 writes, “Rather than imporve their journalism and give people a reason to depend on them again, they are depending on the public to give them free content. It’s part of their freaking business-plan now!”

“Young people do not subscribe to newspapers. I know I don’t want them in my house! So as older subscribers retire, they aren’t being replaced. The Boomers are headed out and a lot of stuff that catered to them will go with them and good riddance!” - goldenhb

“and why are newspapers so great? 90% of their “A” section content is repurposed wire data. yahoo news get the same data, save yourself the walk to the curb. the only thing newspapers seem to still dominate is municipal politics. the ad content is insane in most local papers. the ad content can be weighed in pounds in the san jose merc. i’m supposed to be rooting for this? goodbye, dead industry.” - cypress-hill

Poynter on FT’s integrated newsroom

Posted by Administrator in Will Atkinson, Journalism, News

The FT

Poynter has an interesting story on the Financial Times’ success with the integrated newsroom experiment. Not only are the FT’s print subscriptions up, advertising revenues were up a “robust 9 percent for 2006.”

Gannett is trying similar tactics. Their newsrooms are being dubbed “information centers,” with online and print operations converging.

The convergence of online and print departments into multimedia newsrooms appears to be a positive development for papers. I think this is the direction the entire industry is heading. Small town papers, which claim a monopoly on much information, don’t have as much at stake, but for national papers (Wash Post, NYT, USA Today, WSJ, etc.), the multimedia newsroom is the only way to stay relevant in the digital age.

Review: New York Times Reader

Posted by Administrator in Will Atkinson, Journalism, News

Review: The New York Times Reader

Times Reader

I’m giving the New York Times Reader a spin and want to give readers an overview of the user experience. The New York Times Reader is a piece of software that allows readers to read the Times offline with a variety of text-size options and other features. The reader attempts to give readers a richer onscreen experience than the Web site provides.

Here’s how the Times describes the reader:

Times Reader is a new, downloadable software application that lets Windows XP and Vista users read The New York Times electronically, online or offline, in a paginated format as opposed to scrolling down a Web page. Times Reader lets users retrieve all the latest news and photos (a process that takes about a minute) and read the content offline. It also let’s you check to see how much of the paper you have read and easily navigate to articles of interest that you may have missed.

According to the FAQ, the reader is “free during the beta period,” so presumably the Times will charge for access in the future. The beta period is supposed to last until Windows Vista launches, which is slated for January 2007. Unfortunately for Mac users, this program is Windows only. However, the Times has both a Linux and Mac version in development.

#1 - Download
To download the reader, which is still in beta, go to the Times’ Web site. Make sure your computer has at least 384 Mb of RAM, a 1 Ghz processor and Windows XP with the latest updates. The Times’ Web site also requires free reg.

#2 - Install
Download file

The downloaded file has a 4.3 Mb memory footprint. Double-click the file, TimesReaderFullSetup.exe, and click continue. Interestingly, the reader requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0.

Install screenshots:

From the marketing images, it appears the Times is courting the mobile market: “Take the news anywhere,” “Looks great on every display.”

The install time is lengthy, easily surpassing 15 minutes. I’m running 2.93 Ghz, 496 Mb Ram and Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

#3 - Open

Opening Screen

The reader installs a desktop icon (no install option to exclude this). The user interface is similar to the NYTimes.com, but with more white space (no advertising).

The GUI has a progress bar that shows what percentage of the newspaper is downloaded (circled in red):
GUI

There’s also an interesting feature that hides the stories that you’ve read. With a few hacks, it wouldn’t be hard to implement this feature on the Web.

The Reader has a full-screen option that’s better than anything a browser can manage. In full-screen, the Reader takes up the entire screen with no navigation bar at the top.

#4 - User experience:
I found the Reader to be more agreeable to read than the Web site version. There is no scrolling as the program uses a button system instead. Also, the font face is higher resolution and easier on the eyes than the Web version.

Reading options

You can save, print, e-mail and make notes about stories.

There have been other attempts to replicate print newspapers on the Internet (Newsstand, Zinio, etc.) but the Reader is more compelling because it continuously updates and offeres more features.

Screenshot of the settings window:

One of the most compelling features is the search function. Search returns are displayed almost instantly and there are three ways to display the results.

The topic explorer has a slider that can adjust the complexity of the topic chart.

Overall, this is an interesting product that can streamline your news consumption. If you own a tablet PC, this would be a great way to read the news on the bus or train. It’s an interesting idea and surely a peak at the future of newspapers.

Cons: cumbersome installation process, Windows XP only, stability might be issue for beta users, requires MS Framework 3.0,
Pros: great way to access NY Times via PDA, cool search features, font is extremely readable, more immersive reading experience

Overall: If you’re into reading the Times on the Web, the Reader is a great way to go. It’s nice to have all the news downloaded in an easy-to-read format. The portability is nice, as well as the search features. However, if you’re not a regular Times reader, it’s just too much.

Lying

Posted by Administrator in Will Atkinson, Journalism

The secret is out: journalists lie. Woodward and Bernstein, journalism’s beatified sons, lied to score their scoop. Jayson Blair lied to keep his prestigious job. I recently read Sissela Bok’s classic book on lying, aptly titled “Lying.” Enjoy:

lying

In 1978’s “Lying: Moral Choice in Public and Private Life,” writer and philosopher Sissela Bok addresses the act of lying and its moral implications. Bok was astonished at the lack of moral theory available in the late 70s in regards to lying (Bok xix).

What is a lie? According to Bok, a lie is a statement intended to mislead (Bok 8) . Her definitions does not account for the factual truthfulness or falsity of a statement, but rather if the statement was “intended” to mislead (Bok 8) . A misleading intent, therefore, is the unique feature that characterizes a lie.

Bok discusses several systems by which philosophers have used to weigh moral decisions, one of which is the philosopher Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative. Kant’s categorical imperative states, “Act only on that maxim whereby thou canst at the same time will that it should become a universal law” (Bok 52). In other words, all of one’s actions should be able to be applied successfully and morally to humankind.

As a mass communication professional, one can use Kant’s categorical imperative to help make decisions in newsgathering and other activities. Bok warns against journalists using deceptive tactics, “If deception is pervasive and rarely punished, then it will be all the more likely to spread” (Bok 120). Bok mentions two revered newspaper reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, as examples.

Both reporters received Pulitzer Prizes for their work in investigating President Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate break-in. A movie based upon their stories, “All the President’s Men,” won several Oscars in 1976, including for best picture. Obscured in all the hullabaloo was an unsettling fact: Woodward and Bernstein lied to sources in order to extract information. In fact, “the two journalists came to tell more than one lie; a whole fabric of deception arose” (Bok 120).

Sources were falsely told the reporters already had information when it was merely speculation, the reporters fraudulently impersonated officials, and they lied to sources “in order to extract corroboration of a fact which [Deep Throat] would have feared to reveal in other ways” (Bok 121). Additionally, the Washington Post printed some stories by Woodward and Bernstein “for which there was not always adequate evidence” (Bok 121).

Bok elaborates the reasoning the two journalists might have had for lying: professional pressure, desire to break a story first, and to gain fame (Bok 120). The “mounting crisis” of Watergate provided an adequate circumstance for the reporters to lie (Bok 120,121). The Watergate stories needed to be told but Bok is unconvinced deception was required in order to report the stories. “The absence of any acknowledgement of a moral dilemma” troubles Bok even more. She writes that young reporters might be inspired by Woodward and Bernstein to pursue similar tactics as journalists (Bok 121). Woodward and Bernstein’s example could have severe professional effects on journalism and its perceived credibility (Bok 121).

Although credibility problems with the media existed when Bok wrote “Lying” in the late-70s, her words seem prophetic as prominent media studies continually find problems with the public’s perception of media credibility. A large portion of modern newspaper readers believes papers “are often biased and tend to over-cover sensational stories” (“The Findings in Brief”).
If Kant’s categorical imperative were applied using Woodward and Bernstein’s methods, it becomes difficult to foresee any improvement in media credibility. Reporters would be known universally as liars and would not be trusted. With Woodward and Bernstein’s methods used universally, sources would soon dry up because they would not want to be lied to or used as advancement in a reporter’s quest for fame.

Bok is hardly negative toward journalistic pursuits, however. In a 2003 conference on journalism and business values held by the Poynter Institute, Bok said, “Journalists already have a head-start on high-quality ethics because they often come equipped with a healthy skepticism” (Sloan). She said a “continued and repeated emphasis” on ethical practices by CEOs and company boards is “vitally important” (Sloan). Therefore, she believes the people who control a company – publishers, editors and station managers – can set an ethical tone beneficial to all companies, including those that produce journalism.

Mass communication professionals rely upon the “principle of veracity.” The principle of veracity, or truth, is a “foundation of relations among human beings; when this trust shatters or wears away, institution collapse” (Bok 31). Consumers of media invest their time because they believe in the truth of what they see, hear, or read. Mass communication professionals, in turn, rely upon the veracity of sources, reports, documents and other sources of news and information. Both media consumers and mass communication professionals rely upon veracity.

Reporters must consider alternative methods to deceptive newsgathering tactics. Lying to get a story, often done to sell more papers or receive higher ratings, will actually erode audience over time (Pritchard 25). Media products considered unreliable sources of news will lose to media outlets that make veracity a top goal. For example, CBS canceled “60 Minutes II” shortly after a questionable segment about President Bush’s military record aired.

Consider the news reporter. A reporter’s job is often to venture into a newspaper’s surrounding community and retrieve news of broad interest. Suppose a reporter overhears a company’s executive having a conversation regarding the company’s impending round of layoffs. Interesting, the reporting thinks. The reporter might think it worthwhile to get some more information. The reporter goes to the company headquarters and masquerades as a janitor in order to listen in on a board meeting discussing the layoffs. A hard-hitting, front-page story is published, sending shocks across the community. The story goes on the wires and the reporter receives book offers and television interviews. The public praises the reporter for courage and enterprise.

However, why should the public trust the story? If the reporter misrepresented himself or herself to overhear a meeting, what else might be a lie? What can be taken as truth and what can be taken as falsehood? The excuse for the lie would be public benefit. The public now knows that the company is going to fire people, and people who have jobs there can leave earlier.
However, predictions of a public good that will result from a lie are risky. “The possibilities of error about one’s good intentions are immense” (Bok 81). Because of the reporter’s story, the company might declare bankruptcy (due to a stock market dive) and employees would not receive severance packages. A plethora of possible negative scenarios could result from the reporter’s decision to gather news disingenuously.

The truthfulness of a reporter is essential. Any aberration from ethical conduct impairs other journalists and erodes public confidence. Additionally, it is imperative to remember the speculation of public good that will result from a story gathered through surreptitious means is a loser’s game.

Take another example: the editor. Editors control what media consumers see, hear and view. They determine newsworthiness of stories. Suppose an editor is learns of a couple that was killed waiting in a car. The editor learns the police charged two suspects and puts a reporter on the story. The reporter brings back a story with all the necessary details and the editor prepares to place it on the news page layout.

Before going to press, the editor learns the suspects previously charged have been cleared of the crime. The police have named another suspect. Your photographer already has a picture of the previous suspects, your reporter has the story, and you have already laid out the page. Do you wait until the next day?

The editor might go ahead with the story the reporter already wrote. It might be late in the day and the editor wants to come home to a family and eat dinner. The editor might go through three ways Bok says people come up with excuses. The editor might not see a fault in reporting the original story. After all, what does the editor know about this new suspect? This new suspect could be cleared as quickly as the first one. Second, the editors might clear himself of blame, because “he is not responsible” (Bok 74). It is not his fault the police are going through suspects like wildfire, after all. Third, the editor might even blame the police. The editor has “good reasons to do as he did” (Bok 74).

Under no circumstance should the editor name the individuals originally charged with the crime. The editor would be printing information he knows to be untrue. Word that the editor knew the information was untrue would undoubtedly get to the public (perhaps in the blogosphere). The paper would be shamed and its credibility tarnished.

By putting forth a lie as truth, media professionals cannot expect the public to accept media products as truth. It is self-defeating and hypocritical to use deceptive tactics in a profession that vaunts the pursuit of truth.

The Vanishing Newspaper

Posted by Administrator in Will Atkinson, Journalism, News, Winthrop U.

I wrote a paper on Philip Meyer’s excellent book “The Vanishing Newspaper.” Meyer employs quantitative methods to approach the multitude of problems facing papers. He attempts to prove, and comes very close, that good journalism means good business.

In fact, Meyer comes so close at proving the worth of good journalism, his book can be taken as a call for other industry analysts to finish where Meyer started and prove good journalism can mean profits. Anyone with a passing interest in the present plight of print media should read Meyer’s book.

The Vanishing Newspaper - Philip Meyer

Report: “The Vanishing Newspaper: Saving Journalism in the Information Age”

In “The Vanishing Newspaper: Saving Journalism in the Information Age,” journalism professor Philip Meyer attempts to prove quality journalism is good business. With a background in computer-assisted reporting and statistical prowess, Meyer makes a convincing case.

Meyer acknowledges the difficulty of his task: “it is very difficult to show that quality journalism is the cause of business success rather than its by-product” (Meyer 1). The book presents a difficult challenge but one Meyer finds important. With fragmented mass media audiences, “out capacity to understand one another is diminished” (Meyer 5).

Newspaper’s response to other technologies has been inadequate, Meyer contends. Papers are responding to competitive challenge by cutting costs and raising prices (Meyer 9). This “harvesting strategy” has been fueled by investors and money managers who care more about short-term profits than quality journalism (Meyer 9). The book cites an excellent example. In 1986 on the day the Pulitzer Prizes were announced, the value of Knight Ridder’s shares fell. Market analysts reasoned the company wins “too many Pulitzer Prizes” and the money spent on those projects “should be left to fall to the bottom line” (Meyer 6). The harvesting strategy is indicative of a stagnant industry, Meyer writes, and puts a newspaper’s “precious community influence in peril” (Meyer 10). This observation is significant because it shows newspaper companies seem to have accepted that further growth is impossible and decided to increase bottom lines by selling off current portions of the business.

Investor pressure is prompting newspapers to “convert the influence increment into cash” (Meyer 14). This is correlated with the steadily declining confidence in the press since 1972 (Meyer 15) that is also correlated with the decline in daily newspaper readership (Meyer 16). Meyer comes to a startling conclusion with this information: newspapers are going to be “running out of daily readers late in the first quarter of 2043” (Meyer 16). Clearly, something has to be done in order to save newspapers from disappearing altogether.

The fall in credibility, which is associated with the decline in readership, is important. An American Society of Newspaper Editors found 75 percent of all adults “have some problem with the credibility of the media” (Meyer 18). The study found factual, spelling, and grammatical errors as common concerns. Harvesting market position has caused a cutback in quality, which in turn negatively impacts society influence (Meyer 20). Both of these factors will “eventually destabilize circulation and advertising” (Meyer 20). Newspapers need to find the equilibrium point at which the “optimal compromise between demands of profitability and public service” are met (Meyer 31).

Newspapers used to enjoy an information monopoly (Meyer 35). This monopoly led to high profit margins, which has bred an “easy-money culture” of bad habits (Meyer 35). The warning signs were around long before the Internet, Meyer contends. Cheap computer typesetting, low postage rates, and computerized mailing lists all attacked newspapers’ market position long before the Web (Meyer 39). A newspaper’s market position can be protected by a high “perceived quality” (Meyer 46). Accurate, quality coverage boosts a paper’s reputation.

All new technologies merely deal with information but there are other, more important, factors at play, Meyer writes. “How the information is moved – copper wire, cable, fiberglass, microwave, a boy on a bicycle – will not be nearly as important as the reputation of the creators of the content” (Meyer 46). A paper’s influence “is a real or potentially real factor in determining the value of advertising” (Meyer 56). Meyer says researchers need to do two things to link influence and business success. First, “find a way to measure a medium’s influence” (Meyer 64). Second, “establish a clearer relationship between its influence and the value of its advertising” (Meyer 64).

Credibility exerts an influence on a newspaper’s influence. Credibility has two main components, Meyer writes. One is the “solid inner core that doesn’t change from day to day” and the other is the “variable outer shell that is subject to the shifting winds of public mood as the news changes” (Meyer 71). Credibility is affected by how newspaper readers perceive their paper to be “accurate, honest, intelligent, experienced, informed,” and whether the paper “represented knowledge and understanding” (Meyer 81). Meyer cites a Northwestern University study that found “credible newspapers get more readers” (Meyer 82). Newspapers need to be able to show investors “credibility is good business” (Meyer 82).

Accuracy affects credibility. A 1980 study found “about half of all straight news stories contain some type of error” (Meyer 85). Readers are noticing the errors and “perception of any kind of error undermines credibility” (Meyer 95). It is crucial to get source information correct, Meyer writes (Meyer 96). Sources are often opinion leaders and spread information (Meyer 96). If sourced information is incorrect, word will spread of the paper’s inaccuracies and leads to credibility problems (Meyer 97). The top source-perceived errors are that the “reporter didn’t fully understand the story,” there was “pressure to get the story done on time,” or not enough research was done (Meyer 100). Meyer compares papers with differing accuracy rates and concludes, “Accuracy improves robustness and population credibility” (Meyer 103). Again, he found good journalism means good business.

Readability is also killing newspapers. Many stories are too hard to read (Meyer 115). Today’s generation reads less and on top of that, “most people like to read below their ability level” (Meyer 114). Meyer compared the readability level of 40 newspapers and their market penetration rate. He found that “papers whose editors are pushing the writing down the grade-level scale” are having more success (Meyer 119). As USA Today has shown, “high circulation should be associated with higher readability” (Meyer 121). Meyer notes that increasing readability increases accessible content to readers and to the wider public (Meyer 123). There are “very few cost-free ways of helping society work better, and so [increasing readability] ought to be done” (Meyer 123).

Meyer finds many other interesting conclusions. Local news can actually harm a paper. “As the proportion of local stories in a newspaper increases, household penetration declines” (Meyer 136). In juxtaposition, editorial vigor is related to higher circulation (Meyer 137). The size of a paper’s news hole also has a relationship with circulation. The “percent news correlates positively with household penetration” (Meyer 139).

There are still other factors that have a relationship with a newspaper’s circulation. Robust papers tend to have larger staffs (Meyer 166). Investors are a negative influence in terms of staff strength. Independent and privately owned newspapers have the best staffing (Meyer 166). This is significant because it strengthens Meyer’s view that investors and money managers have negatively affected the journalism trade.

Newspapers need a better relationship with Wall Street, Meyers believes (Meyer 200). The journalism industry needs to change its habits. Accurate reporting, readability, staffing, quality indicators, and trust need to be improved (Meyer 201-202).

Meyer provides a crude business plan for newspapers to follow in the new information age. First, “it is necessary to earn at least as much as you spend” (Meyer 207). This would seem common knowledge but in the dot-com craze of the late 1990s, it did not appear as if anything was common knowledge in the business world. Second, “the return on investment will be at least as much as whatever the bank on the corner pays for certificates of deposit” (Meyer 207). This is the core economic idea of opportunity cost. Third, an investment in a newspaper should grow (Meyer 207). He suggests newspapers can grow by “making the product better and charging more for it, finding new customers, and locating undervalued properties and making them more productive” (Meyer 207).

Throughout the book, Meyer confirms what many journalists suspect. Good journalism positively affects business success. Even with that established, measuring quality in journalism is difficult. Meyer likens measuring quality journalism to measuring love (Meyer 159).

With the Internet, information is readily available. What will be important is the “filtering, refining, decorating, and packaging” of information (Meyer 230). Unlike 100 years ago when information was a scarcity, “the attention of the public has become the scarce good” (Meyer 231). Successful papers will recognize this and package their information in a professional, readable format appealing to readers.

Meyer still has more suggestions for journalists. He advocates increased professional education of journalists. This will differentiate them from everyone else writing on the Internet (Meyer 234). Competence certification, like computer engineer, and enforceable ethics regulations will not only help a journalists get employed but will increase credibility for the journalism profession in the public’s eye (Meyer 243).

The book reads as a wakeup call for newspapers. In order for this venerable medium to survive, serious changes need to be made before its credibility is lost and the industry is forever lost.
